General information

The Digital Genealogical Collection of Central Macedonia constitutes a specialization of the Genealogy Testimonies and "My History" programs in the Region of Central Macedonia.

After Macedonia was liberated and annexed to the Greek state, it received a large proportion of refugees from Pontus, Asia Minor and Thrace because of the big availability of land and buildings that could be used by the newcomers, as well as due to the need for support of the national presence of the Greek element in the northern borders of the country, and because of the harbours and railways that facilitated the access of refugees to the region.

The settlement of refugees shaped the look of Greek Macedonia and was combined with extensive infrastructure work on agriculture, transport and the growth of a public health system.

The refugees experienced more intensely the upheavals of the World War and the Civil War and formed the largest part of the emigration wave, particularly to Germany. Through the history of refugees in Macedonia we open a window to the world of Greek emigration to Central Europe and Scandinavia.

By traveling and researching in Macedonia we met communities of refugees with vivid memories and strong bonds -hospitable people that embraced us in their trust even when we had to refer to the troubled years of the 40s.

The history of refugees in Macedonia, with the abundance of groups that constituted its population in the 20th century, shows us the benefits and the difficulties of refugee integration and the possibilities of an ongoing connection of people to their history.
