Methodology

The program, either by dealing with the collection of genealogical trees, or by conducting interviews and digitalizing evidence, is not limited to refugee Hellenism, nor does it aim to perpetuate segregation or rivalry among different Greek groups. Families and communities that were estranged from their homeland and dispersed so that they were removed or even separated from relatives, friends and compatriots are our starting point. Therefore, our next step is the development of a program about the Greek Diaspora.

However, refugees contrary to other immigrants cannot ever return to their homelands and become even casually reintegrated to their community, listen to stories and anecdotes about their ancestors or retrieve memories from their surroundings, family collections or local archives. Furthermore, to a large extent, the presence of Hellenism in the homelands of refugees irritates bigots even today, and effort is made to silence and conceal data on Greek orthodox communities. In many cases it is only through personal recollections that we can reconstruct the history of families and communities of refugee Hellenism.

New technologies assist our work in many aspects. The digitalization of sources, texts, pictures and serial information offers the possibility of processing a big volume of data but also of sharing information, historical evidence, interviews and the family trees with persons of common origin and interests from all around the world.

The digital reproduction of evidence and the recording of its details in electronic databases guarantee that the details and evidence can be seen without being taken away from their holders, especially if they are family heirlooms that carry great sentimental value.

The photographs, documents, maps, genealogical trees, are transformed from points of friction and contention, into a common property that connects people and gives them the opportunity to create new bonds, based on their common background and love of their history.
